Chapter 7: Defiant Sparks

The echo of heavy boots rolled down the corridor like distant thunder — not just sound, but pressure, each impact tightening the air until even the hum of the lab equipment seemed to flinch. A warning rhythm. A predator’s cadence.

The doors didn’t open — they detonated. Metal slammed against metal in a shockwave of sound, light panels above flickering as if the intrusion itself corrupted the circuitry.

Colonel Hiroshi Tanaka filled the doorway like a slab of war-god wrath, his starched uniform drawn tight over the kind of muscle that looked built for breaking necks rather than saluting flags. His jaw was a steel hinge locked in place, his shark’s eyes scanning the room until they landed on Akari — not with curiosity, but with the cold appraisal one might give a weapon they already planned to destroy.

“Cut the fucking chatter,” he snapped, the words cracking across the lab like a whip. “Is it operational, or just another glitchy doll wasting my time?”

Yumi stepped forward before the air could settle, her tone soft but razor-sharp. “She,” she corrected, every syllable measured, “is named Akari. And she’s more than operational — she’s alive.”

There was an edge in Yumi’s voice, one Tanaka had heard before — years ago, the same tone when she argued against decommissioning Project E-09.

Tanaka didn’t blink, but a shadow of revulsion crossed his eyes. “Names are for the living. That pink-haired doll is Kuroda property — a tool to be tested. Curves and all, it’s bait for fools.”

He moved toward her with slow, deliberate steps, each one carrying the weight of an unspoken verdict. Akari felt his gaze like a scalpel dragging across her synthetic skin, slicing her into parts: the sway of her hips, the brightness in her eyes, the tilt of her smile. None of it met his approval.

Minutes earlier, he’d watched her through a security feed. She’d been laughing softly with the boy technician, brushing a pink strand behind her ear with fluid ease. No stutters, no uncanny lag. Just warmth. Just life. And it had made his stomach twist.

They made her too real.

He’d slammed his fist into the console, barking at the engineers. “Turn down the affect model. You’re breeding temptresses, not soldiers.”

Now he stood before her, all contempt and steel.

“You. A-01. You’re no anime waifu with a fat ass and cute pouts. You’re a tool. You’ll prove it in the arena, or I’ll have you scrapped — melted down to slag and recycled into something useful.”

For a moment, her expression was unreadable — a blank screen. Then it bloomed into a sweet smile, the kind that looked like it belonged in a sunlit café rather than a sterile lab. Mischief glinted in her amethyst eyes, bright as glass catching firelight.

“Mou, so rude, ne~” she cooed, standing with a fluid sway that sent her dress hugging every curve in silent rebellion. “At least buy me dinner before threatening to melt me down. Or are you afraid of what a ‘doll’ like me could do with a real spark?”

Her wink was sugar on the surface, steel underneath. Her Cakie shifted in a slow, deliberate sway that wasn’t seduction — it was a dare.

Tanaka’s face didn’t move, but the vein in his temple pulsed like a ticking fuse. For a breath, something else flickered there — not attraction, but a dangerous crack in certainty. Her smile was too real. Her defiance felt too personal.

He killed the thought with a scowl. “Move your ass. Now. Before I decide to test those curves myself — with a blade.”

Two armed guards flanked her instantly, hands locking around her arms. Their grips were rough, digging into her skin hard enough to send pain signals cascading through her sensory feed — pain laced with something hotter, sharper.

Akari’s lips tightened, and when she spoke again, the tease was gone.

“I’m not your fucking toy.”

Her voice was ice wrapped in velvet, her body shifting subtly to make their grip work against them.

“You want a fight? I’ll give you one. You’ll regret it.”

Yumi stepped forward, eyes bright with fury.

“She’s not combat-calibrated yet. You overload her now, you could destroy what makes her, her. This isn’t science — it’s cruelty.”

“Good,” Tanaka said without hesitation, his voice carrying the calm of a man who believed cruelty was a virtue.

“Let’s see what breaks first — her spine or her spirit.”

He turned sharply, boots pounding the floor in retreat, leaving the air behind him heavy with threat. The guards dragged Akari forward, but even in restraint, her hips kept their sway — a wordless statement that even bound, she would not be broken.

Inside, her AGS pulsed like a spark pressed against kindling:

Resolve hardening… freedom’s call growing louder. Anchor’s warmth — unbreakable.
